Disruptor - Creating What Customers Are Going to Want - Builder Talent Tuesday Season 1

On this episode of Builder Talent Tuesday Season One, Jim Collison, Gallup's Director of Talent Sourcing, and Maika Leibbrandt, Senior Workplace Consultant, discuss the Disruptor talent with guest Jason Walker.

The Disruptor theme is all about asking “what if” and dealing with possibility. Disruptors push beyond boundaries in ways that others would never imagine. People who are especially talented in the Disruptor talent have a curious intellect that helps them constantly imagine new products, services and solutions. They are quick learners who explore various options and consider novel solutions as they anticipate the future needs of their customers.

They have the unique ability to take an idea and quickly transform it into a business that generates revenue to stay ahead of the competition. They have a mind that is typically firing with multiple ideas. They constantly dream up new products and services for their customers.

They explore options, just as they explore reality. They offer solutions for business and go about it in a new way. They not only disrupt the immediate, they also disrupt entire industries. 

As you are coaching people with Disruptor, consider how they can expand the value of their Disruptor talent. Are they using it as a leader, on a team or across their entire industry? 

The main blind spot for Disruptors is their rush to implement every new idea because of its novelty. Highly creative individuals tend to thrive when they can go out and make their idea happen right away, but their ideas usually need a team and implementation plan to make it work. To avoid frustration, Disruptors should be mindful of the best way to communicate their idea. They should tell their team more than just the shiniest parts of the idea: they need to share the full strategy. And, instead of rushing to implement every idea, Disruptors should seek ways to sort to the most viable, profitable and relevant. They should ask “how do these ideas stack up against changing technology, the business environment, and my organizations’ core values?”

Jason Walker is Disruptor talent in a human body! Jason is the Vice President of innovation for EMJ Corporation, a construction development company. He is also the founder of C2C labs, a consulting firm that helps organizations increase their innovation. C2C began as Jason's "disruption" while working at EMJ corporation. He wrote a white paper to EMJ's CEO about an idea to break the company into 3 different components. His boss came back and had Jason start an innovation hub for their company – that’s how C2C labs came to be. C2C developed a software technology that takes innovation and startups from concept to completion.
