Context - Using the Past to Frame the Present - Gallup Theme Thursday Season 2

On this Theme Thursday Season Two webcast, Jim Collison, Gallup's Director of Talent Sourcing, and Maika Leibbrandt, Gallup Advanced Learning and Development Consultant discussed the theme of Context.

People talented in the context theme can weave together a beautiful tapestry with their history and foundational knowledge -- and not many people can see what they see. Context is not high in the strengths database; it is a rare strength.

The motivation behind context is to feed the brain. People with high context want to know more so they have a better understanding -- so they can frame situations and provide reference for everything. Context exists in the world of thoughtfulness; it is a strategic thinking theme. It brings depth to conversation. It can look creative, although it is not about creativity; it’s about facts, knowing where things came from and making connections, not about fictionalizing.

Planting Entrepreneurial Seeds at Cornell University

Increasingly, students in a hospitality entrepreneurship program at Cornell University receive Gallup’s Entrepreneur Profile 10 (EP10) assessment.

The program’s goal? To cultivate a mindset of entrepreneurship and to spark conversations. According to leaders at Cornell’s Leland C. and Mary M. Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship in the School of Hotel Administration, the EP10 assessment addresses the need to talk with students about entrepreneurship early on in their education -- starting them on the path to taking entrepreneurship courses and increasing awareness for the available programming the college offers.

[Recap] Transforming Employee Teams at the University of Kansas Through Strengths - Gallup Called to Coach: Cheryl Pace - S4E9

On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Cheryl Pace.

Cheryl explained that the University of Kansas wanted to change its culture. More specifically, it wanted to focus on engaging its employees in a more meaningful way, Cherly called it, "...the Jayhawk way." The goal of this cultural shift was to give KU employees a common language and tool set for managing difficult conversations and speaking about their career development. In embracing this new culture, Cheryl and her colleagues took Clifton StrengthsFinder. Cheryl was immediately drawn to the authenticity of the assessment and the science behind it. She explained, "I've taken a lot of assessments and this one really stuck out." Cheryl recognized that strengths were the perfect vehicle for increasing employee engagement and tool for transitioning KU's culture. She also knew that she had to become a strengths coach at the university. Cheryl became a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach in May of 2015. Since then, she has  coached individuals and teams at the University of Kansas.

Developer - Rejoicing in the Growth of Others - Gallup Theme Thursday Season 1

People talented in the Developer theme recognize and cultivate the potential of others. They can quickly recognize the talent of others and derive satisfaction from others' growth. Developer has the vision to see the potential in others. When people grow in their talents and strengths, it gives Developers fuel. Developers are patient, growth-oriented, encouraging, effective, self-sacrificing and helpful. Developer acts as an advisor, stimulator, investor, coach, mentor, teacher, encourager and "stretcher" -- they help people stretch their talents. Developers rejoice in helping others grow and cultivate their talents.

[Recap] CliftonStrengths Summit Preview Edition - Gallup Called to Coach: Paul Allen - S4E8

On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup's Strengths Evangelist, Paul Allen.

Paul Allen, Gallup’s Strengths Evangelist, dishes exciting information on the CliftonStrengths Summit in this Called to Coach. “It will be the world’s greatest strengths event, so far," is how Paul opens up the webcast. There will be something for everyone, if you have Learner, there will be a lot of learning. If you have Woo or Connectedness there will be a lot of networking. If you want to hear about other coaches’ best practices and fresh ideas, and how they win clients, you will have the opportunity for that. One example of a unique idea (you can expect to hear at the Summit) is from a coach who created a life-size team talent map. The life-size team grid allowed the group to do an activity that is much more interactive than usual. Loads of time, investment and research are coming to the strengths world, all which will build your strengths-coaching capabilities and business. Paul can’t give away all of the secrets of the #CliftonStrengthsSummit, yet, but he does give away a few, so tune in!

On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup Talent Development Architect, Dean Jones.

Strengths Mastery is where a person’s strengths are fully integrated into who they are as a person. Gallup-Certified strengths coaches have a vested interest in understanding the pathway to strengths mastery. Understanding this path enables coaches to successfully coach their clients in a profoundly meaningful and transformative way. This type of coaching goes beyond knowledge-based coaching and skills-building coaching to transcendent coaching, where clients have insights and epiphanies that change the way they see the world. There are six stages for strengths mastery. This webcast discusses the first three: Understanding, Awareness and Appreciation.

Growing Strengths Organically at the University of Colorado Boulder

What do engaged students look like? And what are the ripple effects of engagement in those students’ lives and the lives around them? 

These are the questions that Cori Shaff, assistant director of outreach and career counseling at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU-Boulder), addresses by using Gallup’s model of strengths to build student engagement and well-being. She wants students to be engaged community members not only on campus, but also in their lives -- whether they’re in the classroom or with their friends, or are serving as student leaders or as employees. Her vision is “for students to feel connected to others and understand what they do best so they can live full and authentic lives.”

Deliberative - Approaching Issues with Thought and Care - Gallup Theme Thursday Season 1

People with high Deliberative have a keen awareness and sensitivity to risk. This drives them to be careful decision-makers, constantly striving to prevent adverse things from happening. The Deliberative theme plays a significant role in a person's tendency to make well thought out decisions. Deliberators aren’t cautious for the sake of being cautious; people who are high in Deliberative exercise calculated restraint for the sake of success.

One phrase that rings true for Deliberative is, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That is, not all successful people are “early birds who get the worm.” Sometimes it is imperative to use caution and think things through. This is something that those with Deliberative in their top five do well.

Millennials are not constrained by the expectations that are set for them. We think big, dream and view the world as a sphere of infinite possibilities. Millennials are a bit idealistic. We grew up in an era of unparalleled “boom” and want to help get people back to our glory days of growth and learning. Millennials are truly changing the world.

To manage millennials effectively, you have to learn how to lead millennials effectively. A millennial myself, I know we require a different style of leadership. Gone are the days of command and control, and welcome are the days of inspiration and empowerment.

Consistency -- Driven by Fairness, Equality and the Rules -- Theme Thursday Season 2

On this Theme Thursday Season Two webcast, Jim Collison, Gallup's Director of Talent Sourcing, and Maika Leibbrandt, Gallup Advanced Learning and Development Consultant discussed the theme of Consistency.

Consistency is about having a great understanding of fairness and balance. People with Consistency are great at repeated motion in processes with people and things.  Consistency loves to find what works and replicate it. As a theme, Consistency used to be called "fairness" and understanding that history is essential to understanding this strength. According to Maika, "There are beautiful leadership capabilities within this theme." People exceptionally talented in Consistency are keenly aware of treating everyone fairly and setting clear rules and following them. They thrive in giving everyone an opportunity and a fair advantage. Consistency is a guardian and a conscience. Consistency can sense when things are out of balance and bring that balance back. Consistency derives energy from repeating a motion. Consistency hungers for equality because that's how people get the most and best work done.

[Recap] Strengths in the Education Realm - Gallup Called to Coach: Namrata Jajoo

On a recent Called to Coach: India Edition, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Namrata Jajoo.

Namrata is passion about putting strengths at the center of India's classrooms. She has worked on having all of her students take Clifton StrengtsFinder. After they take the assessment, Namrata holds a number of group coaching sessions with them. The first session focuses on aspirations. Namrata asks students questions like, "What do you want to be when you grow up?," "What do you do well?," and "Where are there potential challenges in the future? After that, Namrata has student coaching sessions on Name Your Strengths, Claim Your Strengths and Aim Your Strengths. This coaching session structure has lead some of Namrata's students to find their calling in life.

Igniting Your Character with Strengths

6:15 AM: Alarm goes off. It was muggy, humid and hot that morning in August, as I thought about the meeting coming up in just a few hours. My Command was full throttle, with thoughts of how I was going to succeed this morning. I was hundreds of miles away from my home and family. Getting ready for the day in the hotel, thoughts rushed through my head -- my presentation, what to say, wondering whether I had enough data and could I convey the ROI of this project through ROC – even, “how will I be judged?” 

7:45 AM: Arrive at the meeting. The senior staff trickles in taking their assigned seats. Not much discussion, but the thoughts of what’s next are in the forefront of my mind. My Ideation generates fresh thoughts on how I can spin something or counter a question that wants to take me down a rabbit trail from the topic at hand. The CFO opens with some humor and then, like a light switch, turns the meeting to business. As I scan the room, I can feel the eyes of others on me -- wondering why I am in the room.

[Recap] Entrepreneurial Strengths on Campus at the University of Nebraska -- Lincoln - Gallup Called to Coach: Mark Pogue - S4E6

On a recent Called to Coach: EP10 Edition, we spoke to Gallup Learning and Development Senior Consultant, Mark Pogue.

Mark works on campus at the University of Nebraska -- Lincoln, where he is an integral part of Clifton Strengths Institute at the College of Business. Mark conducts a class for all incoming business students. The class introduces students to the University and the College of Business, but moreover, it contains a strong strengths component. All students in the class take Clifton StrengthsFinder. Then, each student has two one-on-one sessions with a specially trained college strengths coach. These coaches are usually upperclassmen and serve as mentors for the younger students. In the fall, over 800 business students will take this class. Right now, Mark is busy finding and training 80 new college strengths coaches so they can handle the large influx of students in the fall.

Connectedness - An Innate Understanding of the Links Between Everything - Gallup Theme Thursday Season 2

Connectedness is about seeing, thinking, feeling and believing in the connections between things. When speaking with people talented in the Connectedness theme, they might describe it as spiritual or mystic, but Connectedness does not have to have a spiritual component. Connectedness is about understanding human behavior, it is engaged in and fascinated by  the links between people, ideas and happenings. Connectedness can build bridges between groups, ideas and individuals. Connectedness can give people perspective, guidance and hope. People with high Connectedness understand that nothing happens in isolation. It sees the connections between facts and occurrences that others may miss.

Context - Understanding the Present and Future Through the Past - Gallup Theme Thursday Season 1

Perspective and background are important for people with strong Context talents. They value the retrospective viewpoint because they believe that is where the answers lie. They look back to understand the present. From the past, they can discern blueprints for direction. And, counterintuitively, they become wiser about the future because they can see its seeds sown in the past.
