On a recent The Great Manager webcast, we spoke with Shawn Patterson, Chief Learning Officer and Vice President of Organizational Effectiveness at DTE Energy. DTE Energy is the first utility company to win the Gallup Great Workplace Award, winning in 2013 and again in 2014.
After unsuccessful attempts to engage its employees through various consulting efforts, DTE Energy decided to concentrate on keeping leadership conversations focused on engagement. Knowing that engagement extends across the entire organization, DTE Energy implemented strategies to better train and develop its struggling employees and instilled action plans so they could improve and learn from their mistakes.

Last spring, I attended a training on the strengths-based initiative that our school would implement this year. I was surprised to learn that we would focus on what is strong, not what is wrong. This idea presented a huge shift in my mindset because, historically, teachers have been trained to identify areas of weakness and provide remediation rather than pinpoint areas of strengths and provide reinforcement. But a shift in mindset alone was not enough to transform a school and a culture. The following is a glimpse into the intentional experiences we created and explored to truly bring strengths to life in our school.
Before we began implementing this initiative at our school, each staff member took the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment to identify our top five Signature Themes. As staff began to discover their personal strengths, I immediately noticed a shift in the culture throughout our building. Teachers were talking openly about their strengths, providing examples of how they use their strengths both personally and professionally and comparing their strengths with colleagues. Our focus centered on ways to use our natural talents and to do what we do best every day. Ongoing professional development, individual coaching sessions, and team building were essential components to ensure that staff remained highly engaged and applied the principles within each instructional team.

On a recent episode of Called to Coach: Singapore Edition, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach Joseph Tan.
Joseph embraced the Clifton StrengthsFinder when he discovered the impact it would have on his clients. Instead of focusing on learned skills, which can hamper an individual’s growth and development, the Clifton StrengthsFinder helped him facilitate conversations that revolve around natural talents. The ability to help others overcome growing pains by focusing on what they do best was Joseph’s call to coach.

On a recent episode of Called to Coach, we hosted Gallup Talent Management Consultant Mike Kinney. He interviews applicants, analyzes interview results and consults with managers in making selection decisions.
Until Mike came to Gallup 25 years ago, he always thought he knew what he wanted to do as a career -- stock broker, radio DJ or computer programmer. But when he interviewed at Gallup for an IT position, he was informed that his talents wouldn’t be a great fit for that role. This initially upset him, but when it was explained to Mike that he would quickly get bored sitting behind a screen all day with minimal interaction with others, he knew they were right (he has Woo in his top five themes). This was one of Mike’s first true interactions with an awareness of his talents.

On a recent Theme Thursday live webcast, we discussed the Connectedness theme with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach Mary Sue Ingraham. Mary Sue’s top five strengths are Input, Connectedness, Ideation, Learner and Intellection.
Things happen for a reason. Those with strong Connectedness talents are sure of it. They have a powerful conviction that everyone is connected. While each person is responsible for his or her own judgments and actions, those with strong Connectedness believe everyone is part of something larger.
