[Recap] Claiming Your Strengths -- Even the Ones You Don't Like at First

On a recent Called to Coach, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Sarah Robinson.








After completing multiple interviews with Gallup, but ultimately deciding that she could not relocate her family for work, Sarah knew she had to be a part of the strengths movement. She loved its emphasis on the positive aspects of people's lives and maximizing day-to-day experiences through unique personal strengths. Because of her enthusiasm for strengths, Sarah was tapped to be one of the first seven Gallup-Certified Strengths Coaches. 

Initially, though, Sarah found her Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment results off-putting. She had four influencing strengths in her top five: Competition, Maximizer, Activator and Significance. Sarah explained that she thought these influencing themes made her appear "clawing and mean." She was offended by her strengths. She said she wanted relationship-building themes in her top five because, "That is how I had always pictured myself."

After her initial disappointment in her top five strengths, Sarah read StrengthsFinder 2.0. She repeatedly read the chapters on each of her influencing themes, and felt her initial disappointment fading away. Once she learned about these themes, Sarah felt they perfectly described her. Sarah's pride in her strengths grew, and she began to see her top five strengths as assets. In fact, Sarah realized that the times she was happiest in her life were when she used her influencing strengths without restraint or inhibition.

Sarah constantly uses her initial negative reaction to her Clifton StrengthsFinder results in her coaching. She finds that many of her clients have similar reactions when they first discover their strengths because they haven't learned the meaning of their strengths. Through strengths education and learning sessions, Sarah finds her clients become comfortable with their strengths and eventually, take pride in them.
