On a recent Called to Coach: India Edition, we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach Anand Pillai.

During his career, Anand has held many high-powered management and human capital positions, including Chief Learning Officer of one of India's largest employers. Well before he knew about the CliftonStrengths assessment, Anand saw the value in focusing on what was right with people when trying to manage and coach them to be more productive and engaged in their work.

Anand often found that people were disengaged at work because they were not the right fit for their role. He described these folks as, "A square peg in a round hole." When he discovered CliftonStrengths, Anand incorporated the assessment into his coaching. This significantly helped his disengaged employees use their strengths to mold the role to their talents, or helped them find a different role that better fit their strengths. Anand witnessed how transformative these changes were for the employees he managed and coached. They no longer dreaded work, and instead found enjoyment in their roles.

In addition to helping individuals, Anand also enjoys coaching teams of people and large companies. He often uses strengths grids to teach these teams about their strengths dynamics. He frequently finds that teams are lacking strengths in one of the theme domains: Relationship Building, Strategic Thinking, Influencing and Executing. He teaches these teams to build and grow in the domains where they have strengths. Anand also shows them how they can collaborate successfully with other teams that have strengths they themselves are lacking. He tells them, "This is what you are -- you are not weak in one area. Rather, you have others that you can collaborate with and rely upon." Anand explains that each team is unique and they can use their strengths together to accomplish anything.
