[Recap] Called to Coach: Southeast Asia Edition With Deon Rademeyer

On a recent Called to Coach: Southeast Asia Edition we spoke with Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Deon Rademeyer. Deon’s coaching focus is on using a strengths-based approach to improve team collaboration and development.

For over 25 years, Deon worked in IT in the banking and finance industry. Although his role concentrated on technology, he always had a knack for surrounding himself with great people and recognizing what it was that they did best. After a very successful career, he realized it wasn’t giving him the satisfaction he needed anymore. Deon took a leap of faith and decided to start his own coaching and consulting practice.

He explained that one of the most challenging areas of coaching is working with disengaged students. He talked about a coaching experience where he taught strengths to 15 students who didn’t want to be at school and weren’t interested in learning about their strengths. Deon said that he was able to reach these students by getting down to their level and having genuine conversations with them. Before long, they were not only interested in their talents, but truly owning them as well.

On the corporate side, Deon explains that when companies make the decision to incorporate strengths into the framework of their organization, it’s important to have a plan. Although having members of the organization discover their strengths is a great way to start, there needs to be a way of measuring that impact, such as Gallup’s Q12 employee engagement survey. Measurable outcomes can provide leaders with a means to determine where organizational and personnel shortfalls lie.

Deon is one of Australia’s first Gallup-Certified Strengths Coaches. He spent over 25 years working in IT in the banking and financing industry. His organization, Team Diagnostics, works on personal development in the corporate sector and with children through non-profit organizations.
