On a recent Called to Coach: India Edition, we spoke with strengths coach Rebecca Parks.

Rebecca first took the CliftonStrengths assessment five years ago after she received StrengthsFinder 2.0 as a gift. Discovering her strengths was such a rewarding experience that she started recommending others take the assessment. Often working with students, Rebecca soon discovered the lasting effect CliftonStrengths can have on the lives of young people. This was her call to coach.

One of the challenges of coaching teens, Rebecca says, is that she has to help them realize that they are capable of great things when they use their talents. Whereas adults can look back on their lives and point out the times where they had used their strengths in the past, it's more difficult for young people to visualize the potential that they have.

As a coach to teenagers, Rebecca says it's amazing what kind of impact a single coaching interaction can have on their lives. At times she has found that she was the first person to tell someone he or she has talent, specifically pointing to what that talent is. It's a powerful thing, especially to young individuals who are unsure of what their future holds and what path of life they want to take.

The most important advice Rebecca gives to those who coach youth in strengths-based development is to get the parents involved. Some parents will have predetermined career goals that they want their child to achieve, such as becoming a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. While it's great that parents have lofty goals for their children, it's vital that parents understand in which areas a child naturally excels. This is key to helping teenagers realize their talents and build their strengths.
