Gallup Called to Coach: Brent O’Bannon -- S2E3

On the most recent Called to Coach, we hosted Brent O’Bannon, founder of StrengthsFinder Coaching and a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach. This was Brent’s second time on the show, and we were thrilled to have him back.

When Brent first learned about strengths, he was a bit skeptical. After witnessing the impact strengths can have, his Competition strength -- which he didn’t yet know he had -- pushed him forward, as he did not want to fall behind. He took the assessment and quickly realized the importance and benefits of having a language with which he could describe himself.

Since discovering his own strengths, Brent has held over 27,000 coaching sessions to help others do the same.

Use Your Strengths to Promote Your Coaching
Each of the 34 strengths falls into one of four leadership domains: Executing, Strategic Thinking, Influencing, and Relationship Building. Brent shared several examples of how coaches can use their strengths in these different domains to promote their coaching practice.
  • Executing: Organize a strengths Meetup event in your community. This provides a way to spread the word about StrengthsFinder at a local level.
  • Strategic Thinking: By using strengths like Input and Learner, scour various resources to absorb information and translate it into learning material to share with clients.
  • Influencing: Speak publicly. Giving presentations provides coaches with exposure, which can translate into future speaking and coaching opportunities.
  • Relationship Building: Send handwritten thank you cards. In the age of electronic communication, this puts a personal touch to your words.
Everyone Needs a Coach
Even coaches need coaching. Brent strongly believes that those who want to effectively coach other people need to invest in their own development and hire a coach of their own.

Don’t forget to join our Called to Coach Facebook page to continue the strengths conversation and network with other strengths advocates and coaches.

Join us for the next Called to Coach on Friday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. EST (-0500 GMT). We will host Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach, Brandon Miller.

Brent’s life as a coach started at 17 when he felt a calling to inspire people. He began mentoring members of his church and speaking to his small congregation where he honed his skills as a speaker. He’s now a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach specializing in helping strengths coaches achieve their goals.
